Definition

Surgically created opening of small or large bowel that is exteriorised to skin, which is attached a bag to collect faeces

Colostomy (large bowel, faeces do not pass through the anus)

Ileostomy (small bowel opening, faeces do not pass through the large bowel and anus)

Stomas can be temporary or permanent
